Sermon Series - Tough Questions For Todays Church
The topics for our sermon series in September and the first Sunday in October came out of the recent survey of our congregations. Issues around sexuality, same-sex marriage and gender identity will be dealt with in the ‘Living in Love and Faith’ course starting on 5 October (see September Newsletter page 13 for more details).
Many of these topics are both controversial and complex, and the sermons will help us to apply Christian principles and understanding rather than offering simple solutions or explanations.
For some people, a topic may touch a raw nerve. Please do reach out to one of the clergy or a trusted Christian to talk through how you are affected, and get support where necessary.

Sermon Series - Introducing The Book of Ruth
From 17th October we will be having a four-part sermon series on the book of Ruth. This is an unusual story for the Old Testament. Unlike most OT books, the book of Ruth is not about kings, leaders, prophets etc, but about an ordinary family, in particular about two women, Naomi and her daughter-in-law Ruth. It’s also named after a woman who isn’t even an Israelite.
It’s a story that begins with tragedy, but through the loyalty, compassion and integrity of the key characters ends happily. The central character, Ruth, is a foreigner (a Moabite). Yet she is commended for her loyalty and diligence, and becomes the ancestor of King David, and therefore, much later, of Jesus (and she is one of four women mentioned in Jesus’ genealogy in Matthew’s gospel[1]).
The story has appealed to people over the centuries, and explores themes that are highly relevant today: bereavement, migration, race relations, and the age-old question of where is God when things go wrong (and when they go right, too!). And, of course, love and marriage are central to the plot. There’s something for everyone in Ruth! And you can read it all for yourself in 10-20 minutes!
