History - Memorials

There are several memorials in the church and only a few are listed below.  As well as memorials, several people have given aspects of the church and practical items in memory of loved ones.

Chislett Memorial

In the floor of the south aisle is a slab of slate with the armorial bearings of William Chislett, who was Deputy Auditor of the Court of the Exchequer in the time of Charles II. This slab was originally in the centre of the nave, but was moved when the church was rebuilt in 1853.

Farrer Memorial

This is a striking marble relief, modelled in Greece, after an ancient sculpture, and representing Sir William and Lady Farrer with their daughter and grandson.  Sir William Farrer, who was for many years a tenant of Sandhurst Lodge, died in 1911. He held the office of High Bailiff of Westminster 1868 – 1887, and acted as solicitor to Queen Victoria.

Geale Memorial

Originally the Geale memorial of brass was lit into a blue stone beneath the east window of the old church. The four plate memorial was cast out into the churchyard when the wall was pulled down in 1865 but was subsequently recovered by Mr Ruben Watts, a former parish clerk who dug them up.  There are four pieces.   The Geale family were influential landowners in Yateley and its surrounding areas in Tudor times.

Rothwell Memorial

There is a decorated brass Celtic cross with a rectangular plaque adjoining its lower edge  in  memory of Henrietta Camilla widow of Col. John Sutton Rothwell R.A. Died May 28th 1902.

Memorials to those who died on active service

There are three memorials in the church to people from Sandhurst who died while on active service.  In addition to the two world war memorials, there is also a memorial to a member of the church who died on active service and received the Queen’s commendation for bravery
