History - Timeline

Over the centuries there have been many key moments in the life of our church.  A few key dates are below.

​First mention of Sandhurst

First mention of a chapel in Sandhurst

1300
​Inventory made of the church

1405
First mention of a churchyard at Sandhurst

1408
Churchwardens ordered to repair the church and churchyard

1417
Richard Bannister bequeathed land and money for the use of the poor in Sandhurst and Yateley

1552
Church commissioners arrived in Sandhurst to make inventory of church goods

1610
John Barber of Hurst rented the parsonage of Sandhurst

1647
Engraved beam

1650
William Barber of Hurst purchased the parsonage house and land from the Commonwealth Commissioners

1662
Book of Common Prayer published

1756
​Sandhurst became a separate parish

1846
Sandhurst becomes part of Diocese of Oxford

1853
Old church no longer suitable. Nave, South Aisle and Tower completed of current church

1854
Font carved

1862
Opening of church school (now known as St. Michael’s School)

1865
Chancel, North Aisle and Organ chamber added. Current church consecrated

1878
First paid organist

1886
Chancel and wall paintings and choir stalls added

1887
Porch added

1914
Large eastward extension of churchyard

1919
War memorial erected both in the town and in the church

1920
PCC set up

1924
Gas lighting installed

1933
Electric lighting installed

1962
Walls in St. Michael’s church whitewashed

1972
St. Michael’s church becomes a Grade II* listed building

1988
Pastoral Centre built

2000
Restoration of St. Michael’s

2004
Employment of a part-time Youth Worker

2015
Celebrated 150th anniversary of current building

2016
Employment of part-time Family Worker

2020
Planned celebration of 800 years of Christian worship in Sandhurst
