Looking back with gratitude
Before I write anything about the future, I'd like to say a massive THANK YOU to all the lovely people who said or wrote kind things to George and me around the time of our leaving on 12th April. Thanks to everyone who attended the leaving party with ceilidh on Saturday 11th and to everyone who said goodbye to us at the 8.00 or 9.30 services on 12th and at the bring-and-share lunch. We're also overawed by the generosity of people who contributed to our leaving presents, a real expression of love which we treasure deeply!
We leave behind a church that is in good heart, made up of people who show their faith and love for God and others by giving their time, talents and money to the work of the church in all kinds of ways. My only request is that you never lose sight of why the church is there in the first place: our mission is to worship God, to nurture believers in faith and to share the good news of God's love with others, by word and action; in the words of our Church Purpose, Knowing God for ourselves, Growing as individuals and as a church, and Showing God's love in the world. This needs to be not just words, but real action, which takes imagination, commitment and courage!
Looking forward with excitement!
I'm pleased to say that we've met a lovely bunch of people since moving to Aldenham on Wednesday and before this on several visits we've made to get the vicarage painted and carpetted, and to meet key people in the church. St John's Aldenham is part of a Team Ministry that includes the sister churches of Christ Church and St John's Radlett and St Martin's Shenley. We met the Team Rector just before he went on adoption leave, and have also met the Team Vicar at Shenley, and I know they will be great colleagues, together with two licensed lay ministers in the Team, not to mention our wonderful churchwarden and churchwarden's assistant at our own church, verger, treasurer, organist and other lovely members of the church.
We'd value your prayers
Please pray for us to build good trusting relationships with our congregation, that will enable us to talk openly about the things we will need to do to make the church more accessible to people who aren't already members of the worshipping community, especially families. Please also pray for good contacts with people in the community. The parish includes 6 small hamlets of varying sizes, and a number of the residents are Jewish. There's also a Hare Krishna community within the parish. It's an affluent area, but that doesn't mean there is any less emotional and spiritual need - in fact the danger is that people who are materially well off don't recognise their need of God. But when the Spirit of God moves in people's lives, miracles happen!
Licensing and Installation on 5th May
The service where the Bishop of Hertford, Jane Mainwaring will license me will take place at 7.30 pm in St John the Baptist, Aldenham, on 5th May. You can download the order of service below, and the service can be watched live and for some time afterwards via this link.
It has been a privilege to be your Rector for the past 21 years, and I wish everyone in Sandhurst every blessing for the future.
John
